Command an Army Units Guide: Every Unit, Cost and Troop Order

Your army in Command an Army is limited by a star-cost system, and knowing which units to spend your stars on decides most early battles. This guide lists every unit spotted in the game so far, the troop orders that control them, and how to build a balanced line.

Quick answer: early on you have five total stars for your loadout. Balanced picks - a shieldman front line, archers behind, a scout rider to flank - beat stacking one expensive unit.

The Star-Cost Loadout System

Units cost stars to add to your loadout, and early on you only have five total stars. That means you cannot bring everything - each match starts with a choice about what your army actually is.

Day-one gameplay suggests the star cap may grow as you level, but this is not confirmed yet. Until it is, assume five stars and build accordingly.

Troop Orders: How to Actually Command

Units do not think for themselves - you drive them with four orders: Follow me, Hold position, Attack, and Rush them.

Hold position is your defensive anchor: park shieldmen on a choke point and let archers work. Attack pushes the whole line forward. Follow me keeps units stacked on you for a focused push, and Rush them commits everything - great for finishing a base capture, terrible as an opening move.

Switching orders at the right moment is the real skill. The common day-one mistake is holding too long: your line stands still, the enemy flanks with fast units, and the fight is lost before you react.

Loadout Tips for Five Stars

  • Two melee + one ranged + one flex beats four of a kind in most early matches.
  • A scout rider is the best single-star answer to enemy archers.
  • Keep one cheap unit in reserve so a lost fight does not leave you with no army.
  • Re-check your loadout after every level-up in case the star cap increased.
